Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Grape Varietals

Muscat of Rutherglen (muscat a petit grains rouge).

Colour

Deep amber with tawny hues.

Aroma

Rich fresh raisin fruit aromas with great depth and showing some rancio characters.

Palate

Great power and intense fruit with balance and elegance. There is evidence of mellow oak with the luscious lingering finish.

Cellaring Potential

Blended for optimum flavour and balance at the time of bottling, this wine will not improve with further cellaring and should ideally be enjoyed soon after opening.

Food Matching

Excellent with vintage cheddar or blue vein cheeses, dried fruit and fresh nuts or as a memorable end to a meal with freshly brewed coffee.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Campbells winery and vineyards are situated in the historic Rutherglen Wine Region of North East Victoria.

Brothers Malcolm and Colin are the fourth generation to carry on the Campbell tradition started by their great grandfather John Campbell in Rutherglen in 1870. Together with their wives Jenny and Prue, they have forged a strong reputation for Campbells as a benchmark Rutherglen wine producer.

The brothers are an ideal team with Malcolm as viticulturist and Colin as winemaker. They have 160 acres of vineyard all within the historic Rutherglen Wine Region and are a true estate grown and bottled operation.

This means we have the ability to nurture our wines from vine to bottle. As Colin says, “Our wines are like our children, we bring them into this world and take great pride and joy in holding their hands and watching them grow”.

Malcolm's approach in the vineyard is quite simple, “Quality even at the expense of quantity is our aim. We assist nature, we don't seek to dominate her.”

Colin believes his role as winemaker is to maximize and protect the natural fruit flavours. His skill is in making wines with structure and balance that can confidently be aged; a hallmark of Campbells Wines.

Today the fifth generation of Campbells is adding their enthusiasm and skills. How excited would their great great grandfather John Campbell be to see this dedication to the Campbell name!

Customer Reviews

Spicy/raisiny complexity starting to build; a large increase in intensity and length over the Rutherglen Muscat. Rating 92 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

"There's a real balance here. All in all it's the most balanced sweetie in our list- flavour, price, bottle design-it's got it all."Matthew Jukes and Tyson Stelzer, Taste Food and Wine(OCT/2006)

The second of four classifications of this region’s world famous fortified is arguably the best buying, with spirit-enforced richness and raisny depth of flavour all singing gloriously. Rich enough to drink with chocolate and other sweet-fruit desserts, pour also over ice cream for a taste sure to melt any heart. Verdict: Seductive - Tony Love, Taste.com.au (FEB/2010)

Rutherglen’s unique, luscious muscats come in four categories – Rutherglen, Classic, Grand and Rare – each representing a step up in age, richness and complexity. Campbell’s basic version, like raisened muscat grapes on a pogo stick, sells for $18.80. But it’s worth stepping up to “Classic”. It’s slightly darker in colour, slightly more olive green at the rim and notably more luscious. It also has the patina of age – a complex of aromas and flavours described by the Spanish as “rancio” – a sniff and a sip brings enlightenment.Chris Shanahan, chrisshanahan.com (JUL/2010)

Layered with rich, luscious, primary fruits of oranges and raisins. Backed by the complexity of roast nuts, this is a concentrated wine with just the right acid profile to keep it bright.Rating 93 - Wine 100 (JUN/2010)
